Catharsis
By traditional definition catharsis means purification or cleansing. Catharsis is the release of emotions connected to traumatic events that have had repressing effects by bringing them back to experience.
Catharsis has two main components; one involves a powerful emotional component in which strong feelings are felt and expressed and the other is cognitive awareness in which the individual gains new insight. Catharsis can play an important role as a stress reliever.
People experience catharsis after experiencing some stressful events such as a health crisis, separation from or loss of loved ones, or job loss. People are made to re-experience these traumatic events, making them realize the threats in the past and becoming less responsive to emotional triggers.
Watching a play or movie, listening to favourite music, reading literature and stories allows people to express themselves and understand better about the release of their emotions. They feel positive afterward.
