Cortical arousal
Arousal refers to anything that results in activation or turning on of the sympathetic nervous system and prepares the body for the upcoming sequences of the actions to be undertaken. Arousal results in increased secretion of certain body fluids, hormones and other adaptation of the body, as might be required for meeting of the immediate situation. Cortical arousal specifically refers to the arousal of different cortical regions of the brain. To speak more specifically when the reticular formation of the brain are aroused, cortical arousal is said to take place. During cortical arousal, there is an increase in the wakefulness, vigilance, heart rate, minute ventilation and muscle tone. Thus the body gets activated physiologically to respond to the stimulus that are both internal or external. It is said that introverts experience more cortical arousal than that of the extroverts, which can be understood as the physiological explanation of the behaviour.
