Dementia
Dementia does not refer to any disease; but it is an overall term that encompasses a wide array of specific medical conditions, that includes a number of other degenerative disorder like the Alzheimer’s disease. Disorders which are grouped under the general term “dementia” are predominantly caused by the abnormal brain changes. These changes largely include a decline in thinking skills, or the cognitive abilities, this degeneration can be severe enough to impair day to day activities and independent function. The neural degeneration also interfere with behavior, feelings and relationships.
Alzheimer's disease alone is said to account for 60-80% of cases. Vascular dementia, that generally occurs due to microscopic bleeding and blood vessel blockage that occurs in the brain, is the second most prevalent cause of dementia. Those who experience the brain changes or rapid degeneration develops multiple types of dementia simultaneously and is said to suffer from mixed dementia.
