Forgiveness
Forgiveness is the phenomena of having positive emotion towards the transgressor, it enhances mental well being. The concept of forgiveness explained by positive psychology is different from spiritual concepts explained different religion.
Factors of forgiveness:
a) Age: Offensive strategies requires more energy than defensive strategies. Thereby, forgiveness increases with age.
b) Sex/Gender: Biological sex is not the determinant of forgiveness, gender roles might sometimes influence.
c) Severity: Severity of the incident and transgressor.
d) Time: The lapse of time between the incident of transgression and the actual time of forgiveness.
Phases of forgiveness:
a) Exploratory phase: This is the uncovering phase, consciously recalling the incident.
b) Decision phase: Counselors and victims interaction.
c) Working phase: Trying to understand transgressor’s perspective.
d) Depending phase: This is the final phase where the survivor has overcome the negative emotion and super imposed it with positive emotions.
When one is in control of situation, forgiveness is easier. Forgiveness gives meaning and purpose in all experience.
