Gag reflex
The term gag reflex which is also called the pharyngeal reflex refers to a contraction of the throat that happens when something (usually external) touches the roof of the mouth, or the back of the tongue or throat, or the area that is around the tonsils of an organism. Such a reflexive action plays a role in the prevention of choking and that protects animals from swallowing substances that are potentially harmful. Generally, most people have an over sensitive gag reflex. This sensitivity is normally triggered by things which include (but is not limited to) postnasal drip, anxiety, or acid reflux. Other times when it is frequently seen in human being is during the act of swallowing pills, performing oral sex , or often seen when a person is at the dentist’s office. The visit to the dentist can be troublesome for those with an overactive gag reflex.
