Hypomanic episode
In bipolar disorder, which is a disorder that falls under the category of mood disorders as per DSM5, there are two phases of mood dysregulation which a person experiences. One is the depressive phase, the other is the manic phase or a hypomanic phase. In presence of a hypomanic phase, an individual is given the diagnosis of a bipolar II disorder.
In the hypomanic phase a person experiences a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, which is less severe than the manic phase lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, along with inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking, flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing, distractibility, as reported or observed. increase in goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation, excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences, etc.
