Intellectual deficits refers to the condition when a person is not being able to achieve development keeping at par with the others of his or her age mates. Intellectual disability can be caused by a range of environmental and genetic factors that lead to a combination of cognitive and social impairments. The factors are:
Single gene causes, visible and submicroscopic chromosomal causes, other microscopically visible chromosomal abnormalities, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Cat’s Cry Syndrome, Phenylketonuria, Rett Syndrome, Neurofibromatosis, Tuberous Sclerosis, Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, Adrenoleukodystrophy, Maple Syrup Urine Disease , problem prenatal period, Rubella, Cytomegalic Inclusion Disease, Herpes Simplex, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Prenatal Drug Exposure, Complications of Pregnancy, Head Trauma, Asphyxia, Long Term Exposures and other factors which includes the contribution of the immediate Environmental and the Socio-cultural Factors or the social and cultural setting in which the individual lives and is brought up after the birth.
