Libido
Libido, a term that was popularized by Dr. Sigmund Freud indicates towards a person's overall sexual drive or desire of sexual activity. In the Freudian psychoanalytic theory, libido is referred to the psychic drive or energy, which is particularly associated with the sexual instinct, but also is quite evidently present in other instinctive desires and drives. Libido is thought to be influenced by biological, psychological, as well as social factors. Biologically, libido is influenced by the sex hormones and associated neurotransmitters that act upon the nucleus accumbens which primarily are testosterone and dopamine, respectively and regulate libido in humans. Social factors include such as work and family, and certain other internal psychological factors, like the personality and the stress level of the person, can affect libido. Libido can also be extensively affected by medical conditions, types of medications, lifestyle and relationship issues, and the age of the person.
