Progressive relaxation
Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is referred to is a deep relaxation technique that has been efficiently used to relieve insomnia, control stress and anxiety, and reduce symptoms of certain types of chronic pain. Progressive muscle relaxation is founded upon the simple practice of tensing, or tightening, one muscle group at a time followed by a relaxation phase which releases tension medical practitioners have employed progressive muscle relaxation with standard treatments for symptom relief in a wide number of conditions, including headaches, high blood pressure, digestive disturbances and cancer pain.
Most practitioners suggests tensing and relaxing the muscle groups one at a time in a certain order, usually beginning with the lower extremities and ending with the face, abdomen, and chest. One can practice this technique seated or lying down, and one should try to practice with comfortable clothing on, and at a place free from all sorts distractions.
