Psychopathology
Psychopathology refers to the study of mental illness or mental distress or the manifestation of behaviours and experiences which might be indicating towards mental illness or psychological impairment.
There many different areas involved in studying mental illness or distress. Most spoken of are the psychiatrists and the clinical psychologists who are particularly interested in this area and is either involved in clinical treatment of mental illness, or research into the origin, development and manifestations of such states. On a wider scope, many different specialties can be involved in the study of psychopathology.
Therefore, when someone is referred to as a psychopathologist, s/he may be one of any number of professions who have specialized in studying this area.
Psychiatrists are particularly interested in descriptive psychopathology,that aims at describing the symptoms and syndromes of mental illness. Psychopathology and psychopathy is not the same, it refers to antisocial personality disorders and criminality.
