Self defeating
To social psychologists, a self-defeating behavior can be any behavior that usually ends up with resulting in something that the person doing the behavior doesn’t want to take place. If someone is trying to accomplish some goal, and in the process does something that makes it less likely that he or she will reach that goal, then that it is a self-defeating behavior.
When the goal is reached, but the ways that is used to reach the goal cause more bad than goal from achieving the goal, that can also be termed as self-defeating behavior. Social psychologists have spent at least 3 decades in studying self-defeating behaviors. And despite successful identification of several things that seem to lead to self-defeating behaviors, much more is left unknown about what self-defeating behaviors have in common, and how can individuals successfully reduce the impact of these behaviors in their respective lives.
