Self injurious
Self injurious behaviour includes any behaviour where someone is involved in inflicting injury to themselves, that is done as a way to help cope with distressing thoughts and difficult feelings. It often takes the form of burning cutting, or taking in non-lethal overdoses of drugs. Here it should be clarified that it can involve any behaviour that causes injury, the minority or high-risk behaviours is not a criteria in this case. Any behaviour that is capable of bringing negative impact to self as a way to deal with difficult emotions qualifies as self injurious behaviour.
These behaviour initially begins as a way to vent the build-up of pressure from distressing thoughts and feelings. Which sometimes offer temporary relief from the emotional pain the person is experiencing. This relief is temporary as the underlying causes still remain, leading to, feelings of guilt and shame, which continues as a circle.
