Self reinforcement
Reinforcement refers to the process where the delivery of an stimulus leads to increase in the probability of a behavior. Reinforcement might be done by giving an appetitive stimulus (positive reinforcement) or by the removal of an aversive stimulus (negative reinforcement). To put on other way, there may be either a positive or a negative contingency between the behavior and reinforcement. A positive contingency indicates to the condition when something is given. A negative contingency means that something is taken away.
When a person tries to learn or achieve something that is new he or she might reinforce themselves as they take up small steps towards their desired behaviour, in a subjectively relevant way. Self reinforcement becomes important specially when the speed of movement toward target behaviour is at a pace that is relevant to the person but not to the onlookers. It aids in upholding self motivation.
