Speech fluency
The word Speech Fluency technically refers to continuity of speech, its smoothness, the rate of speaking, and the effort in production process of the speech. All speakers or the one who is trying to produce speech are disfluent at times and have fumbled. They might meet with hesitation while speaking, often proceed by employing use fillers (“like” or “uh”), or sometimes repeat a word or a phrase or even a sentence. These are called typical disfluencies or nonfluencies.
However fluency disorder is an stagnation in the flow of speaking typically characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies (e.g., repetitions of sounds, words, syllables, and phrases; sound prolongations; and blocks), which might also be accompanied by speaking avoidance, excessive tension, struggle behaviors, and certain secondary mannerisms([ASHA], 1993). People with fluency disorders usually experience psychological, social, emotional, and functional impacts due to their experience of communication disorder (Tichenor & Yaruss, 2019a).
