Supportive
The word supportive indicate to a condition where one individual lends help to other in order to assist the person to overcome a specific situation which is difficult to deal with alone. Supportive relationship can exists in any level, personal like in families or peer relationship, also in professional relationship like in case of a therapeutic relationship. Therapy which aims at providing supporting support is termed as supportive psychotherapy. The main objectives or goal of supportive psychotherapy are-
- to strengthen the existing defenses of the client
- To restoring to an adaptive equilibrium in the client
- to elaborating new and better mechanisms of maintaining control so that the situation can be better dealt with by the client.
Although improvement in all domains of functioning is desired, the major goal of intervention in this therapy is to prevent further deterioration. It can help client with both high and low ego strength.
