Testosterones
The most widely known androgen is testosterone. It is the steroid male sex hormone of vertebrates that is secreted by the testis. A high level of testosterone causes the external genitals to develop the male pattern, and a low level leads to the female pattern.Testosterone stimulates the process of spermatogenisis.
Testosterone, essential for male sexual arousal, acts partly by increasing touch sensitivity in the penis. Sex hormones also bind to receptors that increase responses in parts of the hypothalamus, including the ventromedial nucleus, the medial preoptic area (MPOA), and the anterior hypothalamus.
Testosterone is secreted by the leydig cells of testis, the leydig cells are regulated by follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and interstatial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH) of anterior pituitary gland. The hormone is responsible for development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics. Thus, the early testosterone promotes the male pattern and inhibits the female pattern.
