Unrealistic elation refers to the sudden upliftment of mood, which is usually because of, can also be because of a underlying mental disorder like the mood disorder or certain personality disorders.
All of us have witnessed moments when our mood have been elevated by some external environmental stimuli and have changed from a depressed to euthymic, most of us have also experienced mood swings. However, problem arises when there is frequent mood elevation because of no real reason reason for such mood elevation and a person is unable to control one’s arousal.
When a person suffers from disorders like mania, they might continue to be in an elevated mood conditions over hours of the day and sometimes even continuously for days, becoming overactive and experiencing reduced need for sleep or resting, which no real reason for it. This kind of mood elevation is often ego dystonic and pathological.
