Violent suicide attempts
A patient suffering from depression/dysthymia/certain personality disorder should be asked about any current thoughts of suicide, and upon finding out that the thoughts are present, they should be asked what is the patient’s intent. Certain patients describe having thoughts of suicide but they have no distinct intention of acting upon these thoughts or wish to be dead, these patients are found reporting that although the thoughts are present, there exist no clear intention of acting on the thoughts. However there are patients who violently wants themselves to be dead. There are the patients who will actually express their determination to end their life and are at much higher risk when the attempts are present. Here it is worth mentioning that, the presence of psychotic symptoms should also be assessed. Some patients who experiences hallucinations, reports that it compelling them to hurt themselves even if they do not have a desire to die. When someone attempts to kill oneself, he or she should be dealt with extra care and attention both by the clinician and the family members.
