The term Attachment conveys the idea that an infant has the ability to acquire a special emotional relationship with those who care for him/ her, and they also experience pleasure or security in their presence, but the anxiety and the distress that occurs when they are gone. Attachments are quite well established through interaction with care- giving adults and it varies in quality depending upon the nature of the interaction. Although the physical presence of the mother or the care giver is ameliorative, her psychological availability is necessary. An attachment is an emotional bond that binds one person with another person of relevance. John Bowlby popularized, developed and refined the concept of attachment during his research years. He imbibed the ideas from the psychodynamic theory of Sigmund Freud and from ethology that is the study of animal behaviour, which lead to the development of a theory about the bonding relationship that develops between parents and their children, or caregiver and the child, and the disruption to that relationship that might occur through bereavement, separation, or emotional deprivation.
