Denial
Denial as per Sigmund Freud can be understood as a type of defense mechanism that comprises of ignoring the reality of the present situation so that anxiety can be avoided. As per Freudian psychology, Defense mechanisms are the strategies used by people to cope with real life situation that are distressing. For the case of denial, it generally involve denying the consequences of that reality or not acknowledging reality altogether .
When one is using denial as the defense mechanism, it typically implies that one is having a problem or struggling to accept something which normally seems overwhelming or might appear to be stressful. However, for short span of depressing times, this defense mechanism can have a useful purpose.
