When an event occurs around us, we usually try to attach meaning to it for accommodating it with the knowledge and information that is already available with us. This act of attaching meaning might sometimes be faulty, resulting in attaching of incorrect meaning to a particular situation, this phenomena is termed of misinterpretation. Interpretation forms the basis of our understanding of a situation, therefore, misinterpretation can potentially result in problematic understanding.
Misinterpretation an have several underlying causes. A person might misinterpret when he or she is in a emotionally overwhelmed state of mind. This kind of misinterpretation is often seen in patients suffering from anxiety or depression. Here, individually often misinterpret neutral or ambiguous stimulus as something threatening or depressing, respectively, attaching negative meanings to it. Sometimes clients suffering from OCD often misinterpret neutral stimulus with something that is not realistically connected to it and exhibit pathological behaviour.
