Parasomnia is a behavioural disorder that occurs during sleep. The sufferer of Parasomnia behaviour may experience unusual and unwanted behaviour while sleeping. Parasomnia can make it difficult to get restful sleep. It may also increase risk of accidents and health related problems due to lack of sleep.
People can feel Parasomnia during any stage of sleep, they can experience it while non-rapid eye movement sleep or rapid eye movement sleep, and transition between sleeping and wakefulness.
Sleep walking, sleep talking, groaning in sleep, bed-wetting, night mares, night terrors and grinding of teeth during sleep are types of parasomnia that people experience.
It is seen that children get affected by Parasomnia more than adults. Children who have psychiatric conditions such as epilepsy are more likely to suffer Parasomnia.
