Rituals
Rituals are the symbolic behaviour that people perform during, before or after a meaningful event. Rituals are found everywhere, all across the world and are filled in every aspect of human lifestyle. Whether through religion, business, politics, education, sports, or the military. Rituals are central to many meaningful traditions and cultural practices.
Rituals involve repeated sequence of actions. These are set of practices that develop into a habit over time. People engage in rituals with the intention of achieving certain desired outcomes. Rituals help reduce anxiety and enhance performance.
Excessive engagement in ritualistic behavior is sometimes noted in disorder like OCD, where an individual feels a compulsion to perform a certain ritual, so that they can overcome the impeding anxiety. Most of the times however, the ritual and the anxiety have no logical connection. Such behavior is ego dystonic and can result in reduced well being of an individual.
