Self harm
Self-harm includes any behaviour where someone is involved in causing harm to themselves, that is done as a way to help cope with distressing thoughts and difficult feelings. It often takes the form of cutting, burning or taking in non-lethal overdoses of drugs. Here it should be clarified that it can involve any behaviour that causes injury, the minority or high-risk behaviours is not a criteria in this case. Any behaviour that that causes harm to self a way to deal with difficult emotions qualifies as self-harm.
Self-harm initially begins as a way to vent the build-up of pressure from distressing thoughts and feelings. Which sometimes offer temporary relief from the emotional pain the person is experiencing. It is quite important to note that this relief is temporary as the underlying causes still remain. Resulting in, feelings of guilt and shame might follow, which continues as a cycle.
